Sensation and perception 5.1 5.2 5.7 Flashcards
Sensation VS Perception
Sensation
Features of the environment, Ie. Electromagnetic wavelengths of light or changes in air pressure that create sound that we use to create understanding of world
Perception
Processing of stimuli to create an understanding of the world
Transduction
Bottom up processing
neural process that starts with the physical message or sensations up to the brain
Top down processing
neural process that builds upon ones prior understanding of the world ie memories, beliefs, and expectations combined with incoming neural messages
Stimulus detection
The principle that states stimuli detection is based off of many thing person to person such as culture, geography, etc REFER TO 5.7 at end for more info
What is figure ground perception
ability to differentiate an object from its background
Principle of similarity
Object that have similar physical traits will be grouped together ie. Spectators in the same color jersey at a football game
Principle of closure
Brain can perceive whole objects even when some information is missing
Principle of proximity
object that are close together will be grouped together ie. Square shape made up of circles place close together, brain perceives square
Principle of good continuation
You can still follow lines despite them crossing over one another in other words the ability to interpret/follow obscure images with crossing lines
Principle of common fate
Objects moving together will be grouped together
Properties of waves
