Sensation and perception Flashcards
Sensation
The process by which sense receptors such as site, hearing, smell, taste and touch are activated so that signals are transmitted to the brain
Perception
The process by which sensory signals are selected, organized and interpreted in the brain
Selecting what does this involve?
It involves paying attention to the same sensory signals in the environment while ignoring others
Organizing what does this involve?
It involves shaping the sensory signals into something that we understand
Interpreting, what does this involve?
This involves deciding what sensory signals mean
For example, a flash of red brake lights from a car in front
What are the three factors that perception is influenced by?
- The object itself
- The background or surroundings
- The experiences of the person who is perceiving (movie theater - Sally seat kicker)
