Sensation and Perception Flashcards
What are the 3 levels of neural integrations in sensory systems?
Receptor level: sensory receptors and primary sensory neuron
Circuit level: processing in ascending pathways
Perception level: processing in cerebral cortex, interpretation.
What are the 2 pathways that trasmit impulses via the thalamus to the sensory cortex?
Dorsal column-medial lemniscal and spinothalamic.
What pathway only transmits information to the cerebellum?
Spinocerebellar.
What is the purpose of the spinothalamic pathway?
Transmits impulses for pain and temperature and couse touch to make multiple synapses in the brain stem.
What is the purpose of the dorsal column-medial lemniscal pathway?
Precise, straight-through transmission of inputs for localized touch and vibration sensations. Also from proprioceptors.
What are the 4 components of the dorsal column-medial lemniscal pathway?
dorsal white column, fasciculus cuneatus, fasciculus gracilis and medial lemniscus.
What are the 2 different conponents and purpose of the spinocerebellar pathway?
Ventral and dorsal spincerebellar tracts: informatiomn about muscle or tendon
