Sensation and Perception Flashcards
Signal detection Theory
A model for understanding how humans make decisions based on sensory input.
Absolute threshold
The minimum intensity of stimulation that must occur before you experience a sensation
Difference threshold
The minimum amount of change required for a person to detect a difference 50% of the time
Agnosia
Cannot recognize things/faces, meaning their ventral stream is interrupted.
Binocular cue
Depth perception
Bottom-up processing
Bottom-up processing is a psychological strategy that uses sensation to perceive information without prior knowledge or experiences
Top-down processing
Top-down processing is the process of using context or general knowledge to understand what we perceive.
Cochlea
Responsible for sound transduction
Cones
Retinal cells that respond to higher levels of light, and result in colour perception.
Cornea
Clear outer covering of the eye
Fovea
Middle of the eye, sees in high detail
