Sensation Flashcards
Sensory integration
The ability of brain to organize, interpret, and use sensory info.
- occurs automatically
- informs and guides motor movement
Feedback control
Uses sensory info during movement to guide output
Feed forward control
Proactive strategy to plan movement
Somatosensory
Sensation received by skin and muscles/ senses that are not specialized.
Specific sensory patterns
Dermatomal distribution
- peripheral nerve distribution: area of skin inner acted by a single nerve.
Nonspecific sensory patterns
Varied and will be a nonspecific or vague area
- PAD, diabetes, MS, SCI, stroke
Superficial sensation/ exteroreceptors
- pain
- temp
- light touch
- pressure
Deep sensation/ proprioceptors
- receive stimuli from muscles, tendons, ligaments, joints,& fascia.
- proprioception
- vibration
- movement awareness
Combined cortical sensation
Requires info from both superficial and deep receptors as well as sensory association areas.
- sterognosis ( know by feel)
- bargnosis
- graphesthesia
- tactile localization
- texture
- double stimulation
Testing procedures
Teach pt what you'll do Trial run Occlude vision Distal to proximal Test a range Make it random
Superficial testing
Sharp/ dull
Temp
Light touch
Pressure perception
Deep testing
Kinesthesia (describe movement)
Proprioception
Vibration
Combined testing
Stereognosis Touch localization 2 point discrimination Graphesthesia Texture
