What is a sign?
Standing for something else
What is semiotics?
Study of social production of meaning from sign systems; analysis of anything that can stand for something else (interpretation of verbal and non verbal)
What is the difference between the signifier and signified?
Signifier: Physical form perceived through senses (an image)
Signified: We associate with the sign)
Who is Barthe what does he believe?
Barthe describes his semiotics theory as an explanation of myth. He claimed every ideological sign is the result of two interconnected sign systems.
What is a myth?
Connotative meaning that signs carry wherever they go; make what is cultural seem natural
What is a denotative sign system?
A descriptive sign without ideological content
content- reality of a deadly virus
corresponding- “protection of community”
signifier- image of the mask in the eyes of the person who sees it or puts it on
What is an example of signs / a myth?
COVID 19 mask; from protection to threat of freedom
