a text has many meanings which can be interpreted in many ways. after many years of repeated codes, their meanings become generally understood by audiences.
what are symbolic codes?
elements within a media text that convey meaning through symbols, signs or visual representations.
what are semantic codes?
aspects of a media text that we understand to have a hidden meaning.
what are proairetic codes?
elements of a media product that signify something is going to happen as a result.
what are hermeneutic codes?
any element in a media text that is not explained to the audience and therefore exists as an enigma and raises questions.
what is a cultural code?
parts of a media text that will only be understood by people of a particular culture (ethnicity, age, gender, etc.)
