What does the AWA require for caging? How big should slots or openings be?
Keep rabbit dry and clean. Openings should be at least 0.5-0.7 in. in at least one direction.
How often must cages be sanitized as per the Blue Book, Guide, and AWA? How is this unique amongst the species?
BB: Weekly, soiled little removed weekly, pans or troughs under grid-floored housing weekly. Guide: 2 weeks. AWA: 30 days. Only species with inconsistency on sanitation of primary enclosure.
How tall must cages be as per the Guide? Per the AWA?
16in per Guide, AWA 14in.
How far off the floor should the food access point of a J feeder be?
3-4 inches
How often does AWA require that food and water receptacles be sanitized?
Every 2 weeks
As per AWA, when should nest boxes be provided? What are they typically made of? What are three characteristics of a good nest box?
Provided for females with litters <1 month. Made of stainless steel or durable plastic. Must be big enough for doe to enter and turn without injury, no drainage holes needed, no slick flooring (connected to hip dysplasia).
As per the AWA, when should bedding be provided?
Enclosures with solid floors, nest boxes.
What lighting and temperature should rabbits be housed at?
30 foot candles 1m off floor. 61-72 F.
Describe air circulation in rabbit rooms
Noncirculated air with negative pressure to contain allergens.
Is there a federal mandate for individual health records for rabbits?
No, but recommended per Guide.
Is individual ID of rabbits legally required?
No
