Seminar 8 Push medications and PICC lines Flashcards
What Length of time is a PVAD short used for
Less than 7-10 days
what length of time is a PVAD midline used for
7 days-1 month
What length of time is a PICC used for
more than 1 month but less than 1 year
what length of time is a IVAD or tunneled CVAD used for
treatments that will last longer than 1 year
if a PICC did not have external markings how would you measure the external length
measure from the hub of the catheter to the insertion site
If the patient has a venous air embolism what position should they be put in and why
left side with the head to the bed tilted down since it promotes the air bubble to get stuck in the heart and not move to any other parts of the body
if a patient has a suspected arterial embolism what position should they be put in
client should be kept in a supine flat position
how can a PICC cause arrhythmia’s
If the catheter migrates into the heart where it can cause irritation
what must all syringes be labelled with
Drug name
Dose/concentration
route
2 patient identifiers
How would you administer an incompatible medication through a PVAD
Clamp the line of the IV that is running and flush with 10 ml NS and then administer the med and flush with 10 mL after administration
After the administration of an IV med through a saline lock how many mL do you need to push at the same rate as the med
puch 5-10 mL at the same rate as the med since there is still some medication in the saline lock
how much flush do you use pre and post med for a central line
10 mL pre med
20 mL post med
what is infiltration/extravasation
when medication accidently is injected into the surrounding tissue around the IV site
how many mL’s can you administer before you have to document on the intake/output record
if giving a volume greater than 20 mL need to document on the input output record
what extra things do you need to document with a PRN medication
document assessment and response in the narrative notes
