Seminar 3 - Carcinogenesis Flashcards
1
Q
Define carcinogenesis.
A
The process of transformation of a normal cell to a cancer cell
2
Q
Outline the multiple stages involved in carcinogenesis.
A
- Initiation: mutation - stem cells
- Promotion: induction - cell division
- Progression: propagation, conversion, dedifferentiation
- Transformation: potential regression
- Evolution: drug resistant clinical tumour
- Metastasis: spread of transformed cells
3
Q
How long does it take for initiation to occur?
A
1-2 days: exposure
4
Q
How long does it take for promotion to occur?
A
10+ years - latency
5
Q
How long does it take for progression to occur?
A
0.5+ years - Malignancy
6
Q
Outline the reasons for an increase in incidence of cancer.
A
- Ageing population - people living to older ages
- Lifestyle changes
- Increased screening - always there but being picked up now
