Seminar 12 - Cancer Heterogeneity Flashcards
Outline the predominant applications of genome sequencing.
- Structural variants
- Point mutation
- Copy number variations
Outline the predominant applications of whole-exome sequencing.
- Point mutations
2. CNVs
What is the exome? What percentage does it comprise of the genome?
The exome is the coding region of DNA. It comprises approximately 1% of the entire genome.
What is cancer heterogeneity?
Different cancer cells show distinct properties:
- Morphology
- Motility
- Metabolism
- Proliferation
- Metastatic proliferation
- Gene expression
- Genetic/genomic alterations
What is heterogeneity between tumours called?
Inter-tumour or inter-patient heterogeneity
What is heterogeneity within tumours called?
Intra-tumour or intra-patient heterogeneity
On the basis of what factors can cancers be divided into different subtypes?
- Histology
- Driver mutations
- Origin
What are actionable mutations?
A subset of mutations that bear therapeutic implications in a subset of cancer patients and for specific therapies
