real Presence
This is when the bread and the wine is turned into the body and blood of Christ at communion. Christ is present at the consecration of bread and wine
Transubstantiation
The part of the mass where the readings are read. Typically includes an Old Testament reading, a responsorial psalm, a reading from the New Testament, a gospel reading, a homily, the profession of faith, and petitions
Liturgy of the word
A reflection on the scripture readings given by an ordained person at mass or during the sacraments. It allows us to understand the readings better
Homily
Originates from the Hebrew word, Shabbat, meaning to cease. It is a weekly day of rest and worship for the Jewish faith. Christians have made the sabbath into the lords day on every Sunday. It is the first day of the week and it is also the day that Jesus rose from the dead.
Sabbath
It is a day that Catholics are supposed to go to and participate in mass. Sunday is one of the most important of these days.
Holy day of obligation
The liturgical year. It is all the seasons that include the major events of Jesus’s life, organized into a calendar (advent, Christmas time, ordinary time 1, lent, triduum, Easter, and ordinary time 2
Church year
It is when Jesus revealed himself to Peter, James, and John in a high mountain.
Transfiguration
A celebration of the paschal mystery that takes place over three days it is a liturgy that begins with the lords supper on Holy Thursday, a service on good Friday, and an evening prayer on Easter Sunday. It is one big liturgy that is spent over three days.
Easter triduum
A name for the people who are newly brought into the church through sacraments of initiation that is done at the Easter vigil
Neophytes
The feast days of the saints that are spread throughout the year in the church’s liturgical calendar
Sanctoral cycle
Also called the divine office; it is a public prayer of the church that makes the entire day holy. It extends the mystery of Christ that is celebrated in the Eucharist. The prayer continues throughout the hours of the day
Liturgy of the hours
A church that was built so it is long and narrowed. It is modeled after the architecture of the public Roman assembly halls. It is also a term that is used to describe churches of special importance
Basilica
A term used to include all of the “last things”. This includes death, judgement, heaven, hell, purgatory, the second coming of Christ, and the resurrection of the body
