Semester 1 Anatomy Flashcards
1
Q
Describe the overall structure of skin
A
3 layers
- epidermis
- dermis
- hypodermis / subcutaneous level
2
Q
Describe the 5 layers of the epidermis
A
CLGSB
Come - Cornified layer or Horny layer of Stratum Corneum (most superficial layer of epidermis)
Lets - Stratum Lucidum
Get - Stratum Granulosum
Sun - Stratum Spinosum
Burnt - Stratum Basale or Stratum Germinativum (deepest layer of epidermis)
3
Q
Sebaceous gland
A
- excretory gland associated with hair folliciles
- Excrete ‘sebum’ - a mixture of lipids
- undergo secretion when the cell lyses
4
Q
Melanocytes
A
- basal layer of epidermis
- synthesise melanin - used to protect DNA from UV light damage
- transmit the melanin to surrounding keranocytes
5
Q
Antigen presenting Cells
A
- Invade the epithelium (stratum spinosum) to collect the antigens
- Then migrate to lymph nodes
- Fewer desmosome connections - so when skin tissue shrinks, a space opens up = makes it easy to find them
6
Q
Meissner’s corpsules
A
- nerve endings which are sensitive to light touch
- close as possible to he skins surface
- surrounded by a fibrous corpuscle
- fine touch sensation
- they are ovally shaped
7
Q
Pacinian corpsule
A
- these are deeper down
- work on deep pressure and vibration
- are still encapsulated
8
Q
Sweat glands
A
- simple coiled glands
- ducts are made of cuboidal epithelial cells
- myoepithelial cells surround the secretory cells
