Q

Describe the 5 layers of the epidermis

A

CLGSB

Come - Cornified layer or Horny layer of Stratum Corneum (most superficial layer of epidermis)

Lets - Stratum Lucidum

Get - Stratum Granulosum

Sun - Stratum Spinosum

Burnt - Stratum Basale or Stratum Germinativum (deepest layer of epidermis)

Q

Sebaceous gland

A
  • excretory gland associated with hair folliciles
  • Excrete ‘sebum’ - a mixture of lipids
  • undergo secretion when the cell lyses

Q

Melanocytes

A
  • basal layer of epidermis
  • synthesise melanin - used to protect DNA from UV light damage
  • transmit the melanin to surrounding keranocytes

Q

Antigen presenting Cells

A
  • Invade the epithelium (stratum spinosum) to collect the antigens
  • Then migrate to lymph nodes
  • Fewer desmosome connections - so when skin tissue shrinks, a space opens up = makes it easy to find them

Q

Meissner’s corpsules

A
  • nerve endings which are sensitive to light touch
  • close as possible to he skins surface
  • surrounded by a fibrous corpuscle
  • fine touch sensation
  • they are ovally shaped

Q

Sweat glands

A
  • simple coiled glands
  • ducts are made of cuboidal epithelial cells
  • myoepithelial cells surround the secretory cells
