Semantics?
The study of meaning in language
Semantic Field?
A group of words or expressions that are related in meaning
Euphemism?
A mild or indirect word or expression substituted for one considered to be too harsh or blunt e.g. passed away
Dysphemism?
A derogatory or unpleasant term used instead of a pleasant or neutral one e.g. dead
Hyberbole?
An extravagant exaggeration
Synonym?
A word or phrase that has the same or nearly the same meaning as another word
Antonym?
A word that means the opposite of another word
Denotation?
The main, literal meaning of a word, not including the feelings or ideas that people may connect with the word
Connotation?
An idea or feeling which a word invokes for a person in addition to its literal or primary meaning
Logos?
To appeal to the audiences’ sense of reason or logic
Pathos?
To persuade an audience by purposely evoking certain emotions to make them feel the way the author wants them to feel
Ethos?
An appeal to authority and credibility
