Studies language that is not directly spoken instead implied meanings
Idiom?
A type of phrase or expression that has a meaning that can’t be deciphered by defining the individual words e.g. raining cats and dogs
Allusion?
When we hint at something and expect the other person to understand what we are referencing
Irony?
A style of writing in which there is a noticeable, often humorous, difference between what is said and the intended meaning
Inference?
An idea or conclusion that’s drawn from evidence and reasoning
Presupposition?
To suppose or assume beforehand; take for granted in advance
Deixis?
The use of general words and phrases to refer to a specific time, place, or person in context e.g. ‘I,’ ‘you’, ‘here’
