Accounts for the meaning of utterances
Inverse marker
Changing an ending but not changing word order to denote a reversal in the roles
Subjunctive marker
changes verb tense because it is hypothetical

Evidential markers
Affixes that denote where the information was learned (hearing, seeing, supposing)
Ergative Language
One that treats the subject of an intransitive verb like the object of a transitive verb, while maintaining the same word order.
She slept
Sheq saw she. (if there was no ‘her’)
Subjects
Agent: The dog bit the man
Theme: The man was bitten by the dog
Experiencer: Jocelyn likes peaches
Location: I shot the bullet into the jello
Goal: Hilda got a puppy
Instrument: The job expanded his possibilities
Thematic Roles
Verbs assign thematic roles to the nouns on either side
I like apples: Experiencer, theme
