Q

A: Intension / extension: intension / extension def 4

A

INT - Context / property that a word / phrase signifies
EXT - denotes the real-world objetc it refers to
e.g. unicorn / mermaid: no real-world reference but differ in intension; evoke distinct mental constructions despite lacking tangible references
e.g. Barack Obama = both intension (concept of person) + extension (real individual)

Q

A: Intension / extension: Intensional / extensional predicates 4

A

INTENSIONAL (such as those involving dreams / beliefs)
- relates to expression’s intension and are sensitive to context
- concerns beliefs / hypothetical scenarios rather than concrete objects
- e.g. “I dreamt about the POTUS” highlights a mental activity > real-world identity of the President
EXTENSIONAL (such as ‘met’ or ‘discussed’)
- Focus on the actual objects involved, regardless of context
