Sem 2 Session 1 - evidence based medicine Flashcards
definition of Evidence Based Medicine
conscientious (searched) , explicit (appraised) and judicious (appropriate) use of current best evidence in making decisions about the care of the patient integrating individual clinical experties which best availible clinical evidence
- patient
- clinical experties
- evidence
biological plausibility
- strenghtens the cause for a causual link as it can be demostrated
randomised control trails
- help support if mediciations are useful and effective and help make changes in clinical practice
- updates cinical medicine
clincial epidemology order of heirachy
case controlled studies (6)
prone to bias
selecting cases and controls so hard to make it fair
cohort studies (5)
selecting two groups depending on exposure = less bias because you know exposure came before the disease
randomised control studies (4)
not always appropriate for all studies so may have to fall back and use epidemiological studies
critically appraised articles (3) - systematic reviews (1)
1 - combinidng every single study of interest and then compiling a conclusion or review
is it scientifically proven to work?
looks at comparision between old and new mediciation
calculating the relative risk of mortality from the medicication
- percentage of people that died using the medicine (x)
- percentage of people that doed using the placebo ( y)
- relative risk of mortality = x/y
- risk difference = x-y
*
what is the relative risk
tells you how many more times likely you are to die
number needed to harm
100 / risk difference
= 1 out of this number will die
