self report techniques and design Flashcards
what is a questionnaire?
data that is collected through the use of written questions
what is the difference between closed questions and open questions?
-closed questions have a predetermined range of answers (quantitive)
however open questions invite respondents to provide their own answers (qualitative)
what are some strengths and weaknesses of close questions?
+quantitive data and finite number of options males answers easier to analyse using a graph.
-respondents may be forced to select answers that don’t represent their true though process (data may lack validity)
what are some strengths and weaknesses of open questions?
+respondents can expand on questions which increase detail collected and can provide unexpected answers that allow researchers to gain insight.
-qualitative data is harder to summarise and detect a clear pattern.
what are some strengths and weaknesses of using a questionnaire?
+can be distributed to a large number of people quickly and cheaply meaning the data collected is from a large sample of people
+impersonal nature of questionnaire may also reduce social desirability bias
-take a lot of time to design
-only filled out by people who can read or write and are willing to spend time meaning the sample can be biased.
