demand characteristics Flashcards
what are the demand characteristics?
A cue that makes participants unconsciously aware of the aims of a study or helps participants work out what the researcher expects to find.
what are investigator effects?
anything that an investigator does that has an effect on the participants performance in a study. this includes direct effects (consequence of the investigator interacting with participant) and indirect effects (consequence of of investigator designing the study).
investigator effects may act as a confounding or extraneous variable.
how can investigator effects be reduced?
single blind test -participants aren’t aware of the research aims and/or of which condition of the experiment they are receiving.
double blind test- both participant and person conducting experiment are blind to the aims/hypothesis.
experimental realism- if the researcher makes and experimental task sufficiently engaging, the participant will pay more attention to the task and not the fact they are being observed.
