when a researcher uses various systems to organise observations, such as behavioural categories and sampling procedures.

A
the researcher records all relevant behaviour but has no system.

A
when the researcher divides a target behaviour into subsets of specific and operationalised behaviour

event sampling- counting the number of times a certain behaviour occurs in a target individual
time sampling- recording behaviours in a given time frame
