Q

What are the strengths of questionnaires?

A

Can be cost-effective and time-effective since they can be quickly administered to large numbers of participants. When completed privately and anonymously they can provide honest data, improving reliability. The reduced involvement of the researcher lessons the risk of investigator influence on the behaviour of the participants.

Q

What are the limitations of questionnaires?

A

Response rates can be poor when administered in absence of the researcher. It can be difficult to generalise the findings. It may be that only certain people return them e.g. those who have the time/are motivated so the results may only represent a certain type of person.
It may be difficult to phrase questions in ways that are not open to interpretation by the participants.
