Self report technique
A
Any method in which a person is asked to state or explain their own feelings, opinions, behaviors and/or experiences related to a given topic

Definition of an Interview
A
A ‘live’ encounter (face to face or on phone) where a person (interviewer) will ask a set of questions to assess an interviewee’s thoughts and or experiences

Types of interviews
A
Structured and unstructured

Unstructured interview
A
- No set questions (like a conversation) BUT there is a general AIM
- questions may develop along the intervier process
- Interviewee is encouraged to expand + elaborate their answers

Structured interview
A
- Pre-determined set of questions - asked in a FIXED order
- Like a questionnaire but in real time

- Straightforward to replicate - standardised format
- Reduces the differences between interviewers

- Interviewers cannot deviate from the topic
- cannot explain questions
- limits the richness of the data + limit unexpected information

- More flexibility - can follow up points + more likely to gain a better insight into the worldview of the interviewee
- May included elicit unexpected information

- Increased risk of interviewer bias
- analysis of data may not be straightforward - researcher may look at the wrong parts of the data
- Drawing conclusions may be difficult
