What are self-report techniques?
Any method in which a person is asked to state or explain their own feelings, opinions, behaviours and experiences related to a topic.
What are questionnaires?
A set of written questions used to access a person’s thoughts or experiences
What are interviews?
A face-to-face or phone encounter where an interviewer asks a set of questions to assess the interviewees’ thoughts and experience may be structured or unstructured
What are open questions?
it has no fixed range of answers in which a ppt can respond in any way. This produces qualitative data that isn’t easy to analyse but lacks depth.
What are closed questions?
It has a fixed number of responses which produce quantitative data that is easy to analyse but lacks depth.
What are the strengths of questionnaires?
- cost-effective
- quick as it gathers information quickly
- done without the researcher needed
What are the weaknesses of questionnaires?
- People can lie
- Social desirability
-Response bias
What is a structured interview?
A set of premeditated questions asked in a set order
What is an unstructured interview?
It has no set of questions in which the general aim is discussed. It is used to encourage developed answers
What are the strengths of a structured interview?
- easily replicable which reduces interviewer difference
-less bias
easy to analyse
What are the weaknesses of a structured interview?
- Can’t deviate / it is limiting
What are the strengths of an unstructured interview?
-More flexible as you can follow up on points and gain more insight
- better for sensitive and personal topics
What are the weaknesses of an unstructured interview?
- Analysis is more difficult
- Social desirability bias
