Questionnaires
Pre set list of questions which can be used to measure DV in experiments
Open questions
Open- Not fixed choices which produce qualitative data
Closed questions
Closed- Fixed choices which produce quantitative data
Questionnaires evaluation- Strengths
+ Distribute to many people
+ Fixed choice questions are easy to analyse
+ Cost effective
+ Straight

- Social desirability
- Response bias (people aren’t always truthful)
- Demand characteristics
Interviews
A ‘live’ encounter where one person asks a set of questions to assess an interviewees thoughts and/or experiences
Structured interviews
Structured (pre-determined questions that are asked in a fixed order)
Unstructured interviews
Unstructured (works like a conversation- there are no set questions just a general aim)
Semi-structured interviews
Semi structure (everyday life interview- a job interview)- list of questions but may ask unplanned follow up questions
Structured interviews Strengths
+ straightforward to replicate
+ Reduces differences between interviewers
Structured interview limitation
- Can’t deviate from set questions
- Limit the richness of the data
Unstructured interviews strengths
+ More flexibility
+ Gain more insight into the worldview of the interviewees
Unstructured interviews weaknesses
- Social desirability (lie)
