Self-report Methods Flashcards
Questionnaire?
A set of standardised questions the P’s answer themselves which include open or closed questions
What are open questions?
No pre-determined answers that provide qualitative data
What are closed questions?
Questions that have a set of pre-determined answers and the P picks one of the pre-determined answers
What are strengths of open questions?
-in-depth
-fuller understanding
What are the weaknesses of open questions?
-time consuming to analyse
-time consuming to draw conclusions from
What are the strengths of closed questions?
-easy to analyse
-easy to draw conclusions from
What are the weaknesses of closed questions?
-lacks deep meaning
What are the two types of interviews?
Structured and unstructured
What are scructured interviews?
Interviewer verbally asked the questions that are already set out
What are unscructured interviews?
More like a conversation between the P and the interviewer and can go in any direction they desire
What is a strength of structured interview?
Contain standardised questions which are easy to replicate for reliability.
What is a weakness of structured interviews?
-Interviewers May not be completely honest which is called giving socially desirable answers
-presence of interviewer can have an impact on how they respond, called interviewer effect
What are strengths of unstructured interviews?
-the researcher can steer the interview and get the P to expand on what they are saying
What are weakness of structured interview ?
-not standardised so it is difficult to replicate
What are correlations?
The variables are not controlled, it looks for a relationship between two variables instead of cause and effect
What is a strength of correlation method?
-good starting point for further research because researcher may think a relationship is worth investigating
What is a weakness of correlations?
-not possible to establish a cause and effect between the two co-variables
-correlations can be misused by media and government for statistics
