Experimental Methods Flashcards
Lab experiments
-highly controlled setting
-deliberately changing one variable to measure the effects of the change
-can eliminate extraneous variable
Field experiments
-take part in natural everyday settings
-IV and DV is still manipulated by researcher
Natural experiments
-take place in natural setting
-the IV occurs naturally and is not manipulated by the researcher
Quasi-experiments
-an IV based on existing differences between people
-no one manipulates variable it just exists
e.g age or gender
What is the independent variable?
The variable you change
What is the dependant variable?
The variable you measure
What is internal validity?
What goes on behind an experiment
What is a confounding variable?
A third variable that influences both the independent and dependent variables.
What is an extraneous variable?
Variables you eliminate so they don’t affect the DV
