What are the different types of observations?
-naturalistic and controlled
-covert and overt
-participant and non-participant
What is a natural observation?
Carried out in a natural setting usually the P’s own environment
What is a controlled observation?
Take place in controlled lab conditions
What are covert observations?
Observation is done where the Ps are unaware they are being observed
What are overt observations?
The observation is done openly and the P’s are aware they are being observed
What are participant observations?
Observer gets involved, which can be done overtly or covertly
What are non-participant observations?
Researcher her follows the group around but does no engage
What is time sampling?
Observing at different intervals of time
What is event sampling?
Researcher focuses on a specific pre-selected behaviour and records it every time it occurs
