self report designs Flashcards
What are the types of self report designs?
Interviews and questionnaires
What is a structured interview?
Made up of a pre-determined set of questions that are asked in a fixed order. Conducted face to face or over the phone ie in real time like a conversation.
What are strengths of interviews?
Interviews can see pp’s first, genuine response. Some can provide lots of details and they’re easy to replicate. In a standardised format.
What is an unstructured interview?
Works like a conversation, there’s no set questions. There’s a general aim/topic that will be discussed. Interaction tends to be free-flowing and interviewee is encouraged to expand and elaborate.
Evaluate unstructured interviews
More flexibility and interviewers can gain more of an insight.
However there’s a risk of interviewer bias and analysis of results is hard
What is a semi-structured interview?
Many interviews fall in between being structured and unstructured. In semi structured, there’s a list of questions but interviewers are free to ask their own follow up questions.
Evaluate semi-structured interviews
You can get more detail whilst still receiving and recording the foundation answers
What are questionnaires?
Questionnaires are made up of a pre-set list of written questions (or items) to which a ppt responds. They can be used to assess the DV
What is an open question?
Doesn’t have a fixed range of answers and respondents are free to answer in any way . They tend to produce qualitative data that contains a wide range of different responses
Evaluate open questions
You get more detailed answers and a higher external validity. A wider variety of responses.
However repossess may not be truthful to try and present themselves in a positive light and social desirability bias is possible.
What is a closed question?
A closed question offers a fixed number of responses. For example, a scale from 1 to 10 or a yes or no question. They produce quantitative data
Evaluate closed questions
Can produce graphs and easy to draw conclusions. Can be distributed and can gather info easily
However responses are restricted and may lack depth. Some people might have different perceptions of scales may be different (7/10 may be different for people)
