Research Issues Flashcards
Define EV’s
Any variable other than the IV that may affect the DV if not controlled
Define confounding variable
A type of EV but a CV varies systematically with the IV. Therefore, we can’t tell if any change in the DV is due to the IV or the CV.
What are demand characteristics?
Any cue from the researcher or situation that maybe interpreted by ppt’s as revealing the purpose of the investigation. This may lead to a ppt changing their behaviour within the research situation
What are investigator effects?
Any effect of the investigators behaviour (conscious or unconscious) on the research outcome or the DV. This may include everything or from the design of the study to the selection of and interaction with ppts
What is randomisation?
The use of chance methods to control for the effects of bias when designing materials and designing the order
What is standardisation?
Using exactly the same formalised procedures and instructions for all ppt’s in a research study.
