Ethical Issues Flashcards
When do ethical issues arise?
When a conflict exists between the rights of participants and the goals of research
What are the 4 ethical issues that can arise?
Informed consent, deception, protection from harm, privacy/confidentiality
Explain informed consent.
Involves making the ppt’s aware of the aims of the research, the procedures, their rights (including the right to withdraw). Ppt’s should be able to decide whether to take part or not without feeling obliged or judged.
Explain deception
Deliberately misleading or withholding info from the ppt’s. Ppl’s who haven’t received adequate info therefore haven’t fully consented. There are situations when deception can be justified if it doesn’t cause the ppt undue distress. If ppt’s have been deceived, they should be given a debrief where they are told the truth
Explain protection from harm
Ppt’s shouldn’t be placed at any more risk than they would in everyday life. They should be protected from physical and psychological harm. They must be reminded of their right to withdraw
Explain privacy and confidentiality
Ppt’s have the right to control info about themselves. If this is invaded, confidentiality should be respected. Personal details should be protected and any data published must use false names or numbers.
