What is the definition of self-esteem
The degree to which one values oneself
Similar to consciousness (a belief in ones own abilities)
What are the consequences of low self-esteem
Anxiety, stress, loneliness, increased liklihood of depression
Problems with friendships and relationships
Impair academic and job performance
What can cause low self esteem?
Being harshly criticized Being yelled at Being ignore, ridiculed or teased Being expected to be perfect all the time Experiencing failure in sports of school Abuse
What is related to high self esteem?
Being praised- praise the attempts Being listened to Being spoken to respectfully Getting attention and hugs Experiencing success in sports or school Having trustworthy friends
Intervention in younger children
Educate the parents
Make the child safe
Give praise when deserved
Parents need to be consistent (consistent punitive punishment is better than inconsistent lighter punishment)
Make special time for the child (1 hour per week)
Get them involved in activities they like and do well at
Stop activities they do not like or fail at
Keep expectations realistic
Accept that childern make mistakes
Allow the child to make decisions
Change the childs school if there’s a problem
