Selective breeding and genetic engineering Flashcards
What is selective breeding?
A farmer selectively chooses an animal or plant with best characteristics and breeds them and continues this through generations.
What can farmers to improve their livestock and the produce created?
do selective breeding
What are the advantages of selective breeding? (4)
higher yields, products are available for longer periods of the year, extends an organisms tolerance and can produce more uniform crop (easier to harvest)
What is genetic engineering?
Scientists can alter an organisms genes to produce desired characteristics. Genes are put into a plant or animal cells at an early stage of development. As it develops it will display the characteristics of the foreign gene
Why is genetic engineering better than selective breeding for farmers?
because it is quicker and it can happen in one generation
What is an example of a genetically modified product?
Tomato - Frost resistant
Cotton - High yield and pest resistance
Bacteria - Produce insulin for use of diabetics.
