selection Flashcards
what is selection
the process by which those with charecteristucs best suited or adapted to the environment are more likely to survive and breed
directional seletction
selection that favours individuals that vary from one direction from the mean meaning characteristucs change in the population
this occurs when environmental conditions change.
one extreeme is selected over the other
stabalising selection
selection that favours individuals wiyhin the mean on a normal distrubution curve meaning characteristics are kept them same within a population.
this occurs if envirnomental conditions remain stable
both extremes are selected against
natural selection
results in species that are better adapted to where they live
anatomical- arctic foxes have thick fur
phisiological- oxidising fat rather than carbs in kangeroos so water is preserved
behavioural- migration
