Q

the bionomal system

A

species have two named derived from latin
the first name is the generic name and the second is the specific
generic- denotes to the genus
specific- denotes to the species

Q

how does courtship behaviour help achieve max chance of breeding and survival

A
  • enables individuals to recognise members of their own species to ensure that mating only takes plavce between member of the same species and offspring can be maximised
-identify a mate capable of breeding, needs to be fertile and mature
-form a pair bond capable of breeding
-syncronise mating max possibility taht sperm will fuse with egg

Q

biological classsification 1- artificial classification

A

catagorising and dividing species in terms of their analogus characteristics (same function but not the same evolutionary origins) eg having wings (birds and butterflies both use these for flight but originated in different ways)

Q

biological classification 2- phylogenetic classification

A

based on evolutionary relationships between organisms
classified into groups depending on shared features derived from ancestors
arranged into a hierarchy

Q

bacteria

A
  • single celled prokaryotics
  • absence of membrane bound organelles like nuclei
    -ribosomes smaller than eukaryotes
-single loop of dna with no histones

Q

difficulty of defining species

A
  • species are not fixed they change overtime and a new species may develop due to the evolution of a pre-existing one
-within the same species there can be a large amount of variation between members of the species eg breeds in dogs as artificial selection can take place
  • some rarely reproduce sexually
-some populations are naturally separated and may be classified as two different species when they are one
