Rarely cause brain damage and do not indicate that the child is at risk for developing epilepsy

1 in 24 hours
Less than 15 min
Generalized tonic-clonic (not focal)
No Todd’s paralysis
What are the criteria for a febrile seizure?
1) Convulsions with temp above 38C
2) 6 months to 5 years old
3) Absence of CNS infection or inflammation
4) Absence of acute systemic metabolic abnormality that could cause seizure
5) No history of prior afebrile seizure
What treatment can be given to a child with febrile seizure lasting longer than 5 minutes?
Diazepam gel or rectal suppository
