Segars Pharm Lect 1 Flashcards
what are pharmacotherapeutics
study of the appropriate use of medications to effectively treat or prevent disease and manage symptoms
what is pharmacodynamics?
how the drug affects the body- biochemical and physiological effects
what is pharmacokinetics?
how the body affects the drug- time-related physiological process of moving the drug through and out of the body
what is pharmaceutical equivalence?
same ingredients, same dosage form/route, same strength/concentration
Think generics
what is a pharmaceutical alternative?
same therapeutic moiety but different salts, esters, or complexes of that moiety
what is bioequivalence?
similar rate and extent of absorption
– different timing
what is a therapeutic equivalence?
must be pharmaceutically equivalent AND expected to have the same: therapeutic (clinical) effect and safety profile
what is an A FDA rating?
therapeutically equivalent and no bioequivalent issues
a B FDA rating means?
NOT therapeutically equivalent and/or significant bioequivalence issues
what is a pro-drug?
a drug resides in an inactive form, must be metabolized to become active
what are the 2 groups of drugs?
OTC & Behind the counter AND Legend (2 categories)- require prescription
what are the 2 categories of legend drugs?
- scheduled/controlled- habit forming drugs
2. Non-scheduled/non-controlled- not habit forming
Scheduled and controlled drugs are given what sort of designation? means?
CI-CV
Lower risk of abuse the higher the number
C-I have no FDA-approved indications
non-controlled legend drugs last how long?
12 months
which drugs are allowed partial filling?
legend non-controlled
