Gymnosperms (Vascular Seed Plants)
Cycads, Ginkgo, Confiers; Have seeds; Pollen (immature male gametophyte); Sporophyte dominant; Doesn’t need water for fertilization (uses pollination)
Conifers
Cones are the reproductive structure, has both male and female; Cone is the site for all alternation of generations; Has features to help reduce drought:
- Leaves have reduced surface area (needles)
- Sunken stomates
- Thick cuticles
Angiosperms
Very diverse; Flowers are the key characteristic; Flower is the site for alternation of generations

Stamen:
- Anther
- Filament
Female Flower organs
Carpel:
- Stigma
- Style
- Ovary
Monocots
Grasses, palms, lilies;
- One Cotyledon
- Veins usually parallel
- Vascular tissue scattered
- Root system usually fibrous
- Pollen grain has one opening
- Flower organs usually in multiples of 3
Eudicots (Dicots)
Herbaceous and woody;
- Two Cotyledons
- Veins usually net-like
- Vascular tissue usually arranged in a ring
- Taproot (main root) usually present
- Pollen grain has three openings
- Flower organs usually in multiples of four or five
