Sedatives and General Anaesthetics Flashcards
Thiopentone drug group and indications
Barbiturate (ultra short acting)
Induction anaesthetic
Propofol MOA and indications
MOA similar to thiopentone, rapid induction
Used for induction and maintenance of anaesthesia
Desflurane/sevoflurane/isoflurane/methoxyflurane (liquid) MOA and indications
Inhaled general anaesthetics - activates TREK-1 channels, therefore opposing excitation/depolarisation
Midazolam/temazepam/lorazepam/diazepam drug group and MOA
Benzodiazepines
Enhancing the actions of GABA at the GABA-a receptor site
Ketamine MOA and indications
Inhibitor/antagonist of NMDA activation by binding within the NMDA channel
Used for short procedures
Midazolam indications
Short acting benzodiazepine used to produce strong sedation prior to anaesthesia with another agent
