Sedative/Anesthetic/Tranquilizer Flashcards
1
Q
Acepromazine Maleate
A
- Tranquilizer (phenothiazine tranquilizer)
- MOA: phenothiazine tranquilizer which inhibits central dopaminerigic receptors to cause sedation/tranquilization. Antimuscarinic action and blocks norepinephrine at adrenergic receptors (alpha-receptors).
- Tx: sedate, anesthetic adjunct, antiemetic
- SE: sedation, ataxia, hypotention (due to alpha adrenergic antagonism) +/- increased vagal tone (especially brachycephalic)

Q
Trazodone HCl
A
- Seratonin 2a antagonist/Reuptake Inhibitor
- MOA: Potentiates seratoning activity in the CNS
- Tx: behavioral disorders, anti-anxiety
- SE: sedation, ataxia, cardiac conduction disturbance. Serotonin syndrome possible if given withi other serotonergic drugs. *Do not give to patients on MAO inhibitors
- 2-5mg/kg upwards to 14mg/kg/day

Q
Alfaxalone
A
- Anesthetic
- MOA: neuroactive steroid moleculre with properties of a feneral anesthetic. Modulation of neuronal cell membrane chloride ion transport, induced by binding of alfaxalone to GABA cell surface receptors. Metabolism by p450 and conjugation.
- Tx: anesthetic/sedative
- SE: respiratory depression/apnea
- Caution in patients with hepatic dysfunction
- 2-3mg/kg IV/IM (GA dosing)
