What caused the Yorkshire Rebellion?

A

1489: Parliament granted £100,000 subsidy for War to protect Brittany.
It wasn’t well received, given the recent bad harvest, and counties north of Yorkshire didn’t have to contribute as they were expected to deal with the Scots.
Only £25,000 received.

A

1489

  • Henry Percy made their case to the King, he was ignored. Upon returning to Yorkshire, he was killed.
  • The rebels began to march.
  • Thomas Howard defeated them outside York

Jan 1497 - heavy tax to finance expedition to resist invasion by James IV and Warbeck
The Cornish resented that they were expected to contribute

A

16 June 1497 - rebels reached Blackheath, just outside London. 15,000 strong.
They were confronted by Lord Daubenay, they were outnumbered 2:1.
-1000 rebels killed.
-Lord Audley and 2 local leaders executed.

November 1495 - Warbeck lands in Scotland, and was given a pension of £1200 by James IV and is even married to James’ cousin.
Their alliance case to an end in 1497 - Truce of Ayton.

A

August 1497 - surrendered himself. he was eventually executed after trying to escape.
