Cultural defence →religion as focal point for defence of identity against external force e.g. hostile foreign power.
• Cultural transition → religion provides support for ethnic groups e.g. migrants.
Plurality of religion- society no longer unified under one church.

Christianity in Britain will decline past point of no return. Many denom extinct by 2030
Bruce- why decline in Christianity?
Not due to rationality. Because it no longer provides education, welfare and social control Nation State does. No longer social glue✌🏼

Opposite to Bruce- religion not in decline. It was never popular. Religion is flourishing, not declining. Historical records of indifference to religion. Eg USA- church membership has tripled.
