Religion becomes product- can pick and choose from “spiritual marketplace”. Led to increase in client cults.

Postmodern religion emerges to fill spiritual background and satisfy need for meaning.
Quasi religions
Ways of social life that have some qualities in common with religion eg cults of TV, films, UFOs, bands etc. Same functions as religion provides meaning and retreat from alienating society

Holden- developed with most of major world religions. Promise future paradise for people suffering social injustice. Eg Christianity book of revelation (Jesus second coming). Jehova’s Witnesses Core beliefs. Famine, war and genocide justified by prophecies in Bible.
