Public - federal provincial territorial municipal
Voluntary - not for profit, non profit, private
Commercial - profit business also referred to as private
4 types of boards
Policy board (policy design oriented) - establish and implement
Policy governance board (results oriented)
- determine outcomes to be achieved how they are reached
Working or administrative board (operations oriented)
- some responsibilities for the operations such as planning finances human resources
Collective board (Goal oriented)
- a group of like minded people working toward a specific goal
- define and support the basic philosophy same responsibility as working board
Purpose of boards
Governance - the policies developed by the board that give overall direction to the agency
Management - the board takes action and makes decisions
Operations - activities services or programs of the organization
Accountable to their membership funders and stakeholders
Work effectively and efficiently
Must make a decision about structure
Why are policy boards used
To confirm the organizations identify within the community
Why are policy governance boards used
To determine the outcomes and how to reach them
Board executive relationships and the board process
