Leadership skills definition
A social process where leaders influence a group
The sum of a persons ability to help the group achieve their goals
Leadership paradigms
Classical leadership
- dominant leader that directs the group in a certain way towards a goal
Transactional leadership
- the designated leader guides the group towards a goal but in a way that takes into account the individuals within the group
Visionary leadership
- leader inspires group to work towards a vision
Organic leadership
- leadership based on multiple perspectives and talents

- based on the notion that leaders are born not made
Influence theory
- implies a reciprocal relationship between a leader and the followers where a transaction/exchange takes place (leader exerts most influences on members)
Behavioural theories
- leadership is central to performance/outcomes two important dimensions consideration and initiating structure
Consideration
- a leader that is sensitive to the needs
Initiating structure
- the spelling out of task requirements and clarifying
Situational theories /control
Leaders can not rely on considerations and initiating structure, handle each situation uniquely
Extent to which a leader can determine the direction of the group and the outcomes of the actions of the group members
Hershey theory
Based on research leaders fit into two distinct behavioural dimensions
1) task behaviour - leader engages in communication what followers are to do
2) relationship behaviour - leader engages in two way communication by providing emotional support and facilitating behaviours
