Section B teaching styles Flashcards
4 teaching styles
command
reciprocal
discovery
problem solving
5 advantages of command style teaching
clear instructions and objectives control and discipline maintained info can be given quickly if limited time good if dangerous or cognitive learner large groups catered for easily
6 disadvantages of command style
no decision making or learner input
possible lack of understanding
little social interaction with other learners
limited individual feedback
little allowance for creativity and responsibility
demotivation; learner becomes disengaged
6 ideal situations for command style
large groups
novice performers need to be taught recognised technique
dangerous situations
complex tasks
environmental distractions may require issuing of instructions quickly
limited time
6 reciprocal style advantages
clear instructions and objectives
social interaction and communication skills developed
learners develop some responsibility for their own learning
some individual feedback via teacher or partner
learners develop self confidence and motivation levels may increase
teacher still maintains overall control
4 disadvantages of reciprocal style
may be difficult with beginners
learners may lack sufficient communication skills to be effective
learners may not be able to analyse movement and thus provide incorrect feedback
difficulty in monitoring large groups to ensure they are all on task
ideal situations for reciprocal style
more experienced learners
simple skills involved
limited danger
time available
what is discovery style
teacher guides learners to find correct movement pattern by providing information, giving specific cues or asking questions where appropriate
- teacher is a facilitator
can be 1+ solutions and often performer may have to adapt response to suit there own abilities
6 advantages of discovery style
encourages creativity and decision making
development of learners responsibility for their own learning
learners permitted to work at own pace

increased motivation and self confidence
improved communication skills and promoted group interaction
5 disadvantages of discovery style
time consuming

limited development if poor communication skills
progress of large groups difficult to monitor
learning not uniform with all learners
4 ideal situations for discovery style
creativity required
no right or wrong outcome
good communication and interactive skills or a primary aim to develop them
more experienced performers
what is problem solving
teacher sets problem and learner devises suitable solution
open ended approach
encourages creativity while developing cognitive and performance elements of learner
same advantages and disadvantages as discovery
3 ideal situations for discovery style
no correct outcome
time not a restriction
Experienced performers- draw on own knowledge
