Section A - Natural Hazards Flashcards
What is a natural hazard
A natural hazard is a natural event that has social impacts
What is the number 1 most dangerous natural hazard
Flooding
Geological/ tectonic/ geophysical natural hazard
Earthquakes
Volcanic eruptions
Tsunamis
Atmosphere/ climatological natural hazard
Tropical storms
Drought
Wild fires
Hydrological natural hazard
Flooding
What are the 4 factors that increase the risk of natural hazards
Urbanisation
Poverty
Climate change
farming
Urbanisation - natural hazard?
Densely populated urban areas are at great risk from natural evens such as earthquakes and tropical cyclones
Poverty - natural hazard?
In poorer parts of the world, poverty may force people to live in areas at risk, shortages of housing can be dangerous as the houses are on slopes which are unstable. This causes floods and landslides
Climate change - natural hazard?
In a warmer world, the atmosphere will have more energy, which leads to more intense storms and hurricanes. Climate change affects the world as some parts will become wetter with an increased risk of flooding. Other areas may become drier which means droughts and famines
Farming- natural hazard?
In low lying countries, many people live on flood plains. When a river floods, it deposits fertile silt on its floodplain which is great for farming but not for the people living there
