Hypothermia

A

Query hypothermia
-was it immersion
-If it was not immersion, protect patient from wind chill
-If it was immersion, remove patient horizontally from liquid (provided it is safe to do so), and continue to protect patient from wind chill
-Complete primary survey, (commence CPR if appropriate)
-Remove wet clothing by cutting
-Place patient in dry blankets/sleeping bag with outer layer of insulation
-ECG and SpO2 monitoring
-If the patient is responsive but mildly, give hot sweet drinks
-If the patient is moderate or severe unresponsive, request ALS
-If cardiac arrest follow CPGs but no active rewarming
-Hot packs to arm pits and groin
-heck blood glucose levels
-Transport in head down position, helicopter head forward, boat, head aft

-MEMBERS OF RESCUE TEAMS SHOULD HAVE A CLINICAL LEADER OF AT LEAST EFR LEVEL
-PULSE CHECK FOR 30 TO 45 SECONDS
-HYPOTHERMIC PATIENTS SHOULD BE HANDLED GENTLY AND NOT PERMITTED TO WALK

Heat related emergency - Adult

A

collapse from heat related condition
-remove/protect from hot environment (providing it is safe to do so)
-Is the patient alert
-If the patient is not alert, maintain airway and continue to check blood glucose levels
-If the patient is alert, give cold fluids to drinks and continue to check blood glucose levels
-cool patient
-SpO2 and ECG monitoring
-Consider ALS
-elevate oedematous limbs
-Transport

-DO NOT OVER COOL
COOLING MAY BE ACHIEVED BY;
-REMOVING CLOTHING
-FANNING
-TEPID SPONGING
-ICE PACKS

MILD HYPERTHERMIA = HEAT STRESS
MODERATE HYPERTHERMIA = HEAT EXHAUSTION
SEVERE HYPERTHERMIA = HEAT STROKE TEMPERATURE OF ABVE 40 DEGREES C
