If you are involved in a crash where someone has been injured, including a pedestrian or bicyclist, you must remain at the scene and:
• Call 911
• Report the number of people involved, the
type of injury, and the location of the crash.
• Do not move the cars
If you are convicted of leaving the scene of a crash that results in a serious injury, you will face severe penalties:
• revoked license
• prison up to 5 years, fined up to $5,000
NOTE: If the person dies and you leave, prison up to 10 years, fined up to $10,000
If there are no injuries, but your vehicle
cannot move:
• Do not try to cross the road or stop traffic
• Call 911, give crash location, and report you need police assistance despite having no injuries
NOTE: Fender Bender -> move vehicles from travel lane
If there are no injuries and your vehicle can move:
• Move your vehicle off the road, but as close as possible to the crash
• Give & get the following info: name, address, phone number, license plate
number and state, driver’s license number,
vehicle make and model, and insurance
information
• Ask witnesses for names, addresses, and phone #
• Remember crash location, date, time, # of vehicles involved, weather/road conditions, damages, and facts
When must you always call the police I’d?
• When someone has been injured
• Vehicle cannot be moved
• Driver is under the influence
• Driver has no license
• Driver leaves scene without providing info
• Damaged public property
If you strike an unattended vehicle or other unattended property, you are required to:
• Try to find owner to give explanation
• Stay out of traffic
• Leave a note if owner isn’t available
What to do in roadside emergency (flat tire, taking care of passenger, etc) :
• Assess
• Use good judgment
• Watch for other vehicles
What to do in finding a safe place while waiting for road assistance:
• Disabled Vehicle = move to shoulder
• Can reach an off ramp/parking lot = do it even if it means driving with a flat tire/rim damage
• Never stop or park in the triangular shaped painted zones where a ramp exits the road
What to do if you can remain in your vehicle vs can’t
CAN
• stay buckled and face forward
CAN’T
• watch what is happening around you and pick the safest time for everyone to get
out
• move quickly away from the road and get behind an embankment, traffic barrier, or guard-rail.
• move to higher ground
• Face oncoming traffic and remain alert in case a vehicle veers into your path
If a law enforcement officer stops you:
• Go to side of the road and turn on flashers
• Turn off engine and radio
• Roll down window, stay in vehicle, keep seatbelt fastened, keep your hands in plain view, do not argue with the cop if you get a citation
You must move over when approaching any vehicles while they are stopped, standing, or parked on a road with its lights flashing. If you can’t, you must slow down. Violation of this is a misdemeanor with what penalties:
• A $110 fine and one point on your license.
• A $150 fine and three points if the violation
causes a crash.
• A $750 fine and three points if there is a
death or serious injury.
The MVA uses points to track violations and
issue penalties. Points can lead to what?
