Section 7 - Reproduction and Inheritance Flashcards
What does the nucleus in your cells contain?
contains your genetic material in the form of chromosomes
What is a chromosome?
Long lengths of DNA coiled up
What is a gene?
- A gene is a short section of DNA
- Different version of the same gene is called alleles
What are diploid cells?
They have two copies of each chromosome, arranged in pairs
- Humans have 46 chromoseomes in total
- Diploid number of human = 46
Genome def
all the DNA that makes up an organism
What do gene’s do?
Chemical instruction that codes for a particular protein
How can organisms reproduce?
- asexually, mitosis
- sexually, meiosis
How does mitosis work?
Ordinary cells make new ones by dividing in two.
This is how plants and animals repair and grow.
What is asexual reproduction
- organisms that produce offspring through mitosis
- offspring contains identical genes to the parent = no variation
steps of mitosis
- DNA spread out in long strings
- Cells gets signals to divide so cell forms X shaped chromosomes. One half one cell and the other the duplicate
- Line up at the centre and fibres pull apart. Each half to one end
- membranes around chromososmes become the nucleus.
- Lastly cytoplsm divides
How does meiosis work?
- Zygote goes through cell division + becomes an embryo
- Inherits features from both parents = genetic variation
Chromosomes in sexual reproduction
each gamete contains 23 chromosomes
Steps of meiosis 1st division
- DNA starts to duplicate
- Chromosomes line up in pairs at the centre of the cell. Mix between mother and father genes
- Pairs pulled apart by cell fibres
Steps of meiosis 2nd division
- chromososmes line up again in the center of the cell and fibres pull them apart
- 4 haploid gametes formed each gamete contains a single set of chromosomes
Adaptations of plants for sexual reproduction
- Insect pollination: Brightly coloured petals + scented flowers + make big sticky pollen grains
- Wind pollination: Small dull petals + no scent + light pollen grains. Also long filaments and feathery stigma
